Man Jumps Into River And Swims Away In Bid To Escape Being Drafted Into Ukrainian Army

This footage shows how a man jumped into a river and swam away in a bid to escape being drafted into the Ukrainian army.

The incident took place in the village of Staryi Ostropil, in the Khmelnytskyi region of western Ukraine, when the man recently jumped into the Sluch River, according to Ukrainian media.

The footage, filmed by an army recruitment officer, shows the man swimming away from him after he jumped into the river.

The army recruitment officer can be heard laughing and jokingly asking if the man jumped in because he was too hot.

He can then be heard saying: “No, no, you will succeed. Come on, we believe in you.”

After heading towards a bridge that the man was trying to swim under to get away, the recruitment officer can be heard saying: “No one has ever screwed up like this before. Every day this work surprises me.”

It is unclear if the man managed to make good on his bid to escape being served his summons to enlist.

Russia invaded Ukraine on 24th February 2022 in what the Kremlin is still calling a “special military operation”. Today marks the 609th day of the full-scale war.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that between 24th February 2022 and 25th October 2023, Russia had lost about 296,310 personnel, 5,112 tanks, 9,697 armoured combat vehicles, 7,125 artillery units, 833 multiple launch rocket systems, 554 air defence systems, 320 warplanes, 324 helicopters, 5,372 drones, 1,538 cruise missiles, 20 warships, 1 submarine, 9,474 motor vehicles and fuel tankers, and 1,007 units of special equipment.

Russia has claimed that its casualties have been much lower but provides infrequent updates on its latest figures.

Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, has vowed to maintain pressure on Crimea, which has been occupied by Russia since 2014.

He said: “We have not yet gained full fire control over Crimea and surrounding waters, but we will.”

Russian forces continued on Tuesday to pummel the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka, according to Ukrainian officials.

They said that heavy losses had forced Russia to switch from ground offensives to air attacks.

Russia has claimed to have successfully carried out artillery attacks and airstrikes near Bakhmut.

Australia has said that it is sending a 3D metal printer and anti-drone systems to Ukraine as part of a AUD 20 million assistance package.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: “Australia remains steadfast in supporting Ukraine to defend itself against Russia’s illegal and immoral invasion.”

Moldova blocked access to over 20 Russian media websites on Tuesday, saying they were being used as part of an information war against it.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the move was a hostile step that denied Moldovans access to alternative news sources.

Kyiv has implemented a joint defence venture with the German weapons manufacturer Rheinmetall AG to maintain and repair Western weapons sent to Ukraine.

The European Commission has said that the EU is on track to reach its goal of ending its reliance on Russian energy before 2030.
