Ukrainian Air Defence Destroys Russian Shahed Drones Targeting Odesa

These images show Ukrainian air defence destroying Russian Shahed drones targeting Odesa.

The footage shows a number of explosions in the night sky as the Ukrainian air defence systems take out the incoming Russian drones.

The images were obtained from Air Command ‘South’ of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Monday, 23rd October, along with a statement saying: “The enemy’s night attack by the ‘Shahed-131/136’ type attack unmanned aerial vehicles lasted more than 3.5 hours that night.

“Intense combat work of every defender of the sky of southern Ukraine.

“The night bears witness to the indomitable dedication and skill of the soldiers of the Southern Air Command. Nine enemy kamikaze drones were ‘minused’.

“Yes, there is fatigue, but the main thing is the result, satisfaction from the completed task.

“We hold the sky! We continue the fight!

“The video shows the combat work of anti-aircraft fighters of the “Southern” air command this night in Odesa.”

Russia invaded Ukraine on 24th February 2022 in what the Kremlin is still calling a “special military operation”. Today marks the 607th day of the full-scale war.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that between 24th February 2022 and 23rd October 2023, Russia had lost about 294,700 personnel, 5,093 tanks, 9,653 armoured combat vehicles, 7,057 artillery units, 825 multiple launch rocket systems, 551 air defence systems, 320 warplanes, 324 helicopters, 5,345 drones, 1,536 cruise missiles, 20 warships, 1 submarine, 9,419 motor vehicles and fuel tankers, and 998 units of special equipment.

Russia has claimed that its casualties have been much lower but provides infrequent updates on its latest figures.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that the situation in Avdiivka is “particularly tough”.

He said that there were “numerous Russian attacks” but added: “But our positions are being held.”

Six postal workers aged 19 to 42 were killed in a Russian missile strike on a mail distribution centre in Kharkiv on Saturday.

Seventeen people were injured, with seven in serious condition and said to be “fighting for their lives”.

Bridget Blink, the US Ambassador to Ukraine, has condemned the attack, saying: “The Kremlin’s disregard for life as for all the world to see.”

US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell strongly endorsed US President Joe Biden’s USD 106 billion proposal for Israel and Ukraine on Sunday.

He said that Biden and he were “in the same place” on the matter.

Russian officials have said that they shot down three missiles fired at the Crimean Peninsula on Sunday.

The Ministry of Defence of the United Kingdom has said that Russia has likely suffered between 150,000 and 190,000 soldiers killed or no longer able to fight due to injury since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24th February 2022.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is set to visit the Iranian capital Tehran today, Monday, for talks with other foreign ministers in the region.

Ukraine reportedly fears a potential shortage of drones due to a move by China to put restrictions on exports.

The Russian energy company Gazprom will reportedly supply additional gas to Hungary and China to compensate for losing most of its markets in Europe.

Hungary is the only European Union member to have maintained friendly relations with Russia following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
