Russia Says Its Helicopters Destroyed Ukrainian Military Targets In Donetsk

These images purport to show Russian attack helicopters taking out Ukrainian positions on the frontlines.

The images show a Russian attack helicopter being prepared for takeoff before it can be seen taking to the skies.

The video then shows the helicopter flying low over countryside before it unleashes a salvo of rockets at unseen targets.

At least one of the helicopters can then be seen coming in to land back at base as the footage ends.

The images were obtained from the Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) on Tuesday, 9th January, along with a statement claiming: “The strike group of the Army Aviation of the Aerospace Forces, consisting of the Mi-28N attack helicopter, the covering Ka-52 attack helicopter and the Mi-8 search and rescue support helicopter, carried out a planned combat mission in the Donetsk direction.”

The Russian MoD added: “During the combat mission, pilots on Mi-28N helicopters launched missiles at detected fortified points and manpower of Ukrainian Armed Forces units. As a result of combat use, all targets were destroyed.

“The pilot of the Mi-28N helicopter is quoted as saying: ‘We received a combat mission, moved to the target area, and struck with unguided missiles. The task was completed, there were no losses. Everyone returned to the departure airfield’.”

We have not been able to independently verify the claims or the footage.

Russia invaded Ukraine on 24th February 2022 in what the Kremlin is still calling a “special military operation.” Today marks the 685th day of the full-scale war.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that between 24th February 2022 and 9th January 2024. Russia had lost approximately 365,990 personnel, 6,036 tanks, 11,203 armoured combat vehicles, 8,672 artillery units, 954 multiple launch rocket systems, 638 air defence systems, 329 warplanes, 324 helicopters, 6,823 drones, 1,805 cruise missiles, 23 warships, 1 submarine, 11,552 motor vehicles and fuel tankers, and 1,333 units of special equipment.

Russia launched multiple missiles at Ukraine, resulting in at least four civilian deaths on Monday. The casualties include two in Khmelnytskyi and one in Kryvyi Rih, where a 62-year-old was reported killed.

In the Kharkiv region, a 63-year-old woman died in a strike, while Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed 18 out of 51 missiles launched in Monday’s Russian airstrikes, according to Ukraine’s Air Force.

Ukraine’s draft mobilisation law, to be discussed today, Tuesday, excludes the conscription of women and set to be lottery based, clarified Yehor Chernev, deputy chairman of the parliament’s Defence Committee.

Former UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace cautioned his successor, Grant Shapps, about the potential for the UK to lag in military support for Ukraine. The concern stems from the absence of a declared military aid budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025.

Despite not being a full NATO member, Sweden’s Prime Minister declared that the country will deploy troops to Latvia in the coming year.

The move is part of a Canadian-led force aimed at deterring potential Russian aggression.

According to Leonid Pasechnik, the Moscow-appointed regional head in the Russian-occupied Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine. Russian warplane accidentally dropped a bomb on the town of Rubizhne.

Pasechnik stated that the FAB-250 bomb, carrying a high-explosive warhead. Did not result in injuries. However, independent verification of his comments is not available.

Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, asserted that Russia’s attacks on Ukraine have rendered people homeless, emphasising the harsh reality of war.
